Autumn 2 Journey

Please see the topic web below which shows the journey our Year 4 children will be going on throughout this half term.

Autumn 2 Topic Web

Furthermore, we have our homework web which provides guidance for our children and parents to further deepen their knowledge and understanding outside of school.

English

In English this half term, we have focused on the text 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory'. We have really enjoyed the story and become fully immersed within the text. At the beginning of the half term, we received a letter from Sophia Hernandez from the Mayan civilisation in Mexico and she kindly sent us some chocolate to taste. During our reading phase, we have made predictions about the text, looked at the different characters in the text. We looked at how they felt when they received the golden ticket and we even did our own golden ticket hunt. We also explored the different rooms within the Mr Willy Wonka's factory and the features within each room.

During the toolkit phase, we have explored the different features required to write a successfully diary and explanation text. We spent time looking at past tense as well as looking closely at expanded noun phrases and being able to write in second person.

In the writing phase, we wrote a diary entry from the viewpoint of Charlie when he found the golden ticket and then applied our knowledge to independently write a diary entry from a piece of food after travelling through the human digestive system. Following on from this, we wrote a guide book for visitors to the factory about the different rooms they will get to see.

Maths - Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and division

This half term we started by looking at addition and subtraction in our Maths lesson and using the knowledge we learnt in number and place value to help us:

  • Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of column addition and column subtraction.
  • estimate and use inverse to check answers.
  • solve addition and subtraction two-problems deciding upon which operations to use.

We then progressed onto looking at Multiplication and division and started by building upon our times table knowledge learnt in Year 2 and Year 3 then applying this knowledge to aid our learning in other areas of Multiplication and Division:

  • Recalling multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12.
  • Use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally, including by 0 and 1; multiplying together three numbers.
  • Recognise and use factor pairs and commutativity in mental calculations.
  • Multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout.
  • Solve problems involving multiplying and adding, including using the distributive law to multiply two digit numbers by one digit, integer scaling and harder correspondence problems.

Science - Animals inc Humans

In Science this half term, we have been looking at the human digestive system, the different parts and their functions. We even made a practical model of the human digestive system which got a bit messy.

Furthermore, we looked at the different types of teeth we have in our mouths and the role each one plays in breaking down food into smaller parts. We looked at how to look after our teeth as well as carrying out an investigation to see which drink had the biggest impact on our teeth over a period of time.

To finish off the unit we looked at food chains and how each part of the food chain is equally important. We learnt the name of each living thing in the food chain and explore what would happen to the chain should something happen to one living thing.

Topic - Mayan Civilisation

Linking to our text in Literacy, we have studied the Mayans. We studied where in the world the Mayans lived and the impact they have had on the world. We looked at how they lived their lives and the types of buildings that could be found within their settlements. Further to this, we looked at the different types of houses that could be found within a settlement and the types of people that lived in the houses.
