Spring 1 Home Learning

In Spring 1, We have covered:

English

Beowulf : Rob Lloyd Jones, : 9780746096864 : Blackwell's

In English, our focus text has been Beowulf. We began with a hook day where our classrooms had been trashed and we needed to investigate and discover clues to find out how it had happened and who had done it.

Reading Phase - During the reading phase we predicted, look at key vocabulary and performed a range of reading and inference tasks to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the text, the characters and their feelings and emotions.

Toolkit Phase - Our first piece of writing was a character description so our learning focused on Expanded noun phrases, Fronted adverbials and subordinating conjunctions. All of which can be used to enhance our descriptions.

Our second piece of writing was a persuasive speech linking to our History topic of Anglo-Saxons. The children looked at different persuasive techniques as well as reading some examples of different persuasive speeches.

Writing Phase - We began by looking at a WAGOLL for each text before doing a shared write. We then planned our own piece of writing, wrote and edited.

Maths

We began by looking at division. Embedding our understanding of division and learning the formal written methods for dividing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a single digit numbers. Using a range of practical, pictorial and concrete strategies we embedded this knowledge.

After division, we moved onto looking at perimeter. We investigated a range of shapes and how to work out their perimeter. We also did a tell me story linking to our history topic of Anglo-Saxons.

History

In History we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons linking closely to our text of Beowulf. We looked at where the Anglo-Saxons derived from and how they travelled to Britain. Furthermore, we also focused on looking at the impact the Anglo-saxons had on Britain today. We then looked at Anglo-Saxon villages and the roles people had within the settlement before looking at the houses in more detail making a comparison between an Anglo-Saxon house and a Roman house.

Science

In Science, We having been learning about sound. We carried out lots of different investigations to establish how sound is made, how it travels and the effect pitch and volume have on sound waves.
